Yulia Zaulychna

scenographer, theatre and stage costume designer

    

Born in 1985. Yuliia Zaulychna is a bright representative of the new generation of scenic designers, the author of imaginative and functional stage design filled with deep meanings.  She has implemented more than 70 projects in 15 theatres in Ukraine (Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Lviv) and abroad.

Biography

Education:

Graduated from the Faculty of Scenography and Screen Arts of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture of Ukraine. Workshop of Alla Kirichenko, Department of Scenography and Screen Arts (2011).

The artist's career began with her work at the Kyiv National Academic Young Theatre on the play Late Love (directed by Yulia Maslak). She continued her work at the Kyiv National Operetta Theatre. From 2021 to 2023, she worked as the chief artist of the Vasyl Vasylko Odesa Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre, and also constantly collaborated with the independent Wild Theatre and the Ivan Franko National Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre in Ivano-Frankivsk. Since 20 November 2023, she has been the chief artist of the Maria Zankovetska National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre in Lviv.

As an art director, she worked on the short film Roots, based on the short story by Hryhor Tyutyunnyk, The Wild One. Directed and written by Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk, cinematographer Mykyta Kuzmenko (2013). The film was part of the New Ukrainian Wave project.

Awards:

In 2019, Yulia Zaulychna received the award for the best scenography for the play Sunset at the Melpomene of Tavria Festival.

 

The plays ‘Granary’ and ‘Sasha, Take Out the Trash’ were shortlisted for the best plays of the V All-Ukrainian Festival-Prize ‘Play’ of the National Theatre and Comedy Council of Ukraine in 2022.

In 2023, the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre of Ivano-Frankivsk received the award of the Graha Festival-Prize for the scenography for the play Forest Song on the Field of Blood.

 

In 2023, the play Granary by the Rivne Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre was nominated for the Shevchenko Prize.

 

Yulia Zaulychna also received a diploma for the best work of an artist at the Open Night Take 17 Film Festival (2014) for the art design of the film Roots.
