On 5 October, at 17:00, we invite you to the opening of the exhibition "Ukrainian Theatrical Costume of the 20th–21st Centuries. Identity, Context, Landscape" at the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema of Ukraine.

This is the third and final exhibition of the international project implemented by the Scenography Gallery NGO in partnership with the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema of Ukraine, the PLACE ID Territorial Marketing Fund (Poland), with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

The exhibition "Ukrainian Theatrical Costume of the 20th–21st Centuries. Identity, Context, Landscape" presents the works of Ukrainian artists who worked on the creation of theatre costumes at different times - Ivan Buriachok (1877-1936), Vadym Meller (1884-1962), Anatol Petrytskyi (1895-1964), Alla Horska (1929-1970), Myron Kyprian (1930-2019), Yevhen Lysyk (1930-1991), as well as works by practicing artists who form the face of theatre and the art of theatrical costume in Ukraine today - Hanna Ipatieva, Danylia Kolot, Yulia Zaulichna, Olena Polishchuk, Liudmyla Nahorna, Liubov Dushyna, Natalia Rydvanetska, Inessa Kulchytska, Oleh Tatarinov, Bohdan Polishchuk. In addition, the exhibition features the works of talented students of several universities who are now starting their professional careers: Vasilina Bezherianu, Anna Mashkovska, Maria Chornoshkur, Kateryna Marchenko, and Kateryna Tyshchenko.

The exhibition reveals parallels, connections, and continuities in the work of Ukrainian artists. Theatre costume is not only an element of a performance, but also an important carrier of cultural identity. In the twentieth century, Ukrainian artists tried to combine national traditions with avant-garde trends, which allowed them to create bright and innovative forms of performing arts. The exhibition shows how trends in theatrical costume changed over time and under the influence of various historical and political events.

Four original avant-garde theatre costumes from the collection of the Theatre Museum:

Anatol Petrytskyi

Donna Anna's costume and Donna Sol's costume for Lesya Ukrainka's play The Fireplace Master (Shevchenko State Drama Theatre, 1921);

Vadym Meller.

Costume for the composition of the collective work "The Sky Is Burning" based on texts by O. Slisarenko, Mykhailo Semenko, and Geo Shkurupiy (Art of Action, 1921) and Costume of the Worker for the performance "Gas" by G. Kaiser (Berezil Art Association, 1923);

Rare archival photographs and frames from glass negatives from the museum's collection illustrating the evolution of theatre costumes;

The exhibition will also feature theatrical costumes provided by the Lviv National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre named after Maria Zankovetska, the Ivano-Frankivsk National Academic Drama Theatre named after Ivan Franko, and artists participating in the exhibition project.
