"Theatre photography: art or reportage?" — a public discussion to be held at the Les Kurbas Theatre as part of the Lviv Quadriennale of Scenography 2025

We invite you to a public discussion that will take place within the framework of the Lviv Quadriennale of Scenography 2025 — "Theatre photography: art or reportage?"


Participants in the discussion:

  • Artur Buzenko— theatre photographer from Lviv, theatre  "Word and Voice", author of the project "Noise" (2023), participant in Ukrainian and international exhibitions.

  • Daria Bedernychek— Lviv-based photographer working with portraiture, boudoir and theatre. Author of the projects  "100 Self-Portraits in 100 Days", "rozKAZHI", winner of the Lviv City Council award (2021).

  • Anastasia Khlibnyk— photographer and journalist from Odesa (lives in Lviv), collaborates with the Frank House, Lesya Ukrainka Theatre, Les Kurbas Theatre, and Lviv Opera. Author of the project Lighters, volunteer paramedic.

  • Vira Polyanska— PR specialist, blogger, worked with the Lviv Puppet Theatre and Art Centre, currently works with the art club Prologue  and space History.

  • Khrystyna Korol— event organiser, theatre expert, photographer, co-founder of the project Theatre Explosion.

  • Oleksandra Shutova— moderator, theatre expert, head of the literary and dramaturgical department at the Les Kurbas Theatre, lecturer at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.


What we will discuss:

  • How they came to theatrical photography

  • Where is the line between reporting and art?

  • How photographers and theatre interact

  • Preparation for filming and specifics of scenes

  • Photography in PR and communications

  • Personal stories and professional case studies


We invite everyone interested in theatre, photography and visual communication. The discussion is also open to theatre workers who are willing to share their experiences and reflections.
