Yesterday, our joint exhibition opened at the Lithuanian Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema "Theatre stage characters: Ukraine - Lithuania".
We share our report from the museum and the fantastic atmosphere of this event in our photos.
✨The opening was preceded by a series of lectures entitled Dialogues of Identities. Researcher of scenography and Ukrainian theatre, chief curator of the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema of Ukraine Tetiana Rudenko spoke about the brightest moments in the history of Ukrainian scenography: the first professional scenographers in Ukraine, the Ukrainian avant-garde of the early twentieth century, scenography and experiments of the second half of the twentieth century.
🔹Oleh Tatarynov, an artist and one of the curators of the Danylo Lister Triennial of Scenography , gave an overview of the Kyiv school of scenography and spoke about the history of the Triennial.
The opening of the exhibition took place in the arcade of the Small Radziwill Palace. According to the exhibition coordinator Auksė Kapočiūtė-Vaitkuvienė, it was important for the project authors to highlight the issue of identity:
«When you answer yourself who you are, other issues are resolved by themselves. We understand that the war is not only about territory, but also about culture and historical memory».
🔹 Museum director Nideta Jarockienė said:
«In theatre, our history, destinies, and cultural depths come to life through characters. At this exhibition, you will see theatrical costumes - living works of art that contain a dialogue of cultures, emotional tension, and a reflection of the human inner world. Today, when Ukraine is fighting for its freedom and identity, this exhibition becomes not only an artistic event, but also a sign of solidarity».
🇺🇦 Third Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in Lithuania Vladyslav Zozulia conveyed the words of Ambassador Olha Nikitchenko:
«Theatre is what we talk about when we try to make sense of the past, understand where we are, and project the future. Through art, we can tell our story, our desire to be free. We really appreciate that Lithuania is our partner not only in politics, but also in art and culture».
🔹 The curator of the exhibition from the Ukrainian side, artist Bohdan Polishchuk, noted that the Russian war against Ukraine has been going on for centuries:
«I am pleased that this is a true partnership project. We worked side by side, together. The exhibition features both Lithuanian and Ukrainian works. We never forget about the help we receive, but it is also important for us to be partners - to create together».
🏛️ The opening celebration ended with an introduction to the exhibition. The architect of the exhibition, Marius Nekrošius, spoke about the effect of the theatre backstage and shadow theatre, which was important to create for the full immersion of the audience. After that, the curators of the exhibition Raimonda Bitinaitė-Širvinskienė and Bohdan Polishchuk conducted a tour, introducing the artists and their works from both countries.
🔹 Throughout the event, Ruslan Skrobach, a Ukrainian and Lithuanian translator, ensured mutual understanding between the participants .
💛 We sincerely thank the Lithuanian Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema, all partners and artists for this impressive event.
